Just three ingredients are needed to make these delicious chocolaty brigadeiros, or fudge balls, a traditional Brazilian treat.
Spring Break 2020 came and went with all of us in lockdown. Instead of heading to DC as originally planned, the kids and I took a trip around the world, right from the comfort of home. In 5 days, we visited China, Japan, Italy, India and Brazil. For each of our “trips”, we learned a couple of words, took some virtual tours of major cities and landmarks, and cooked some local cuisine. It was quite an adventure!
Our trip to Brazil led us on a tour of Rio de Janeiro and some of Brazil’s beaches, as well as the Amazon. For dinner I made Brazilian pork shoulder. But the highlight of the day were the Brigadeiros, these easy little fudge balls rolled in sprinkles or cocoa powder. The girls had a blast making them and even more fun eating them!
The recipe is unbelievably simple: sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder and a little butter are combined in a pan until thickened. Once cooled, the girls rolled them into balls and then rolled them in rainbow sprinkles or cocoa powder. The girls loved the extra sweetness of the sprinkles, but personally, I liked the cocoa powder better. Given we’re all in quarantine for at least a bit longer, give these a try with your kids!
Looking for more things to make with the kids? My girls LOVE these Oreo truffles.
- 1 14-oz. can sweetened condense milk
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- Sprinkles and/or extra cocoa powder for rolling
- Combine the condensed milk, cocoa powder and butter in a small saucepan. Stirring constantly, heat over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
- Once cool, roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and then roll the balls in your choice of sprinkles or cocoa powder.
- Chill if desired (we liked them cold!)
